Fear of Failure, Fear of Success, Fear of Change?

When thinking about a lifestyle change, starting an at home workout program, or eating better, a lot of fears swirl through our heads and hearts that turn us away from taking that first step. For 24 years or so I was gripped by this fear. I was too afraid to make something of myself, too afraid to leave my comfort zone (mine was a computer screen, what is yours?), too afraid to be noticed by others when I made the change. When you start an at home workout program, start eating better, change your life for the better you need to ask yourself, what are you afraid of? Failure, success, change? It is most likely a mixture of all three, god knows it was for me.

Failure I think this is the most obvious fear we get when we think about getting in shape. We don’t think we are good enough. We don’t think we are going to end up looking like the people in the DVDs (which you aren’t because you are not them!) so we give up before we even try. We are a shamed, self-loathing society sometimes; you have to realize you can do it and the only thing stopping you is this cage of fear inside. I am here to help you break out of it! I lost 40 lbs and am down to the lowest body fat% of my life, you can be too.

Change This was big for me. I didn’t want to leave my chair(s). My lazy boy recliner, my computer chair, whatever…I was comfortable. Life doesn’t happen when you are comfortable folks, sorry! I am learning this currently. You have to get out there and try. Your mind won’t like the change, your big sense of self won’t like the change cause it is new and scary, but you have to stick it out and I promise you it will get better and you will feel so healthy and so good. Welcome the change, as Calvin’s dad from Calvin and Hobbes would say “It builds character.”

Success This one is a bit trickier. Who would be afraid of success? Who would be afraid to go from 60 lbs overweight to having a shredded six pack and 4% body fat. A lot of people, including me. Sometimes people get to their goal, or see great results and they just don’t know what to do with themselves. Some of us have been conditioned and gotten used to a state of unworthiness created by our culture, our families, our backgrounds, and our mental/emotional health (biggie for me!) How dare I try to get in shape! This is reserved for the best of society, not the likes of me!

That is what I felt. I felt like it was too late for me, but I got over that (and still am getting over it, quite frankly) and here I am. Don’t be afraid to be great. Don’t be scared to make healthy changes in your life. You deserve it, you work for it, you decide, you commit, you succeed.

Please leave comments, what are you afraid of? I want to know! Facebook, Email, lets start a dialogue…don’t be scared ;-)
